The Deg-Bhapka
Method
For over five centuries, the artisans of Kannauj have practised Deg-Bhapka hydro-distillation - a copper still, a fire of sandalwood, and an open sky. Petals are packed into the Deg, water is added, and the sealed vessel rests over a slow flame.
Steam carrying the botanical essence travels through a bamboo pipe into the receiver - the Bhapka - submerged in cool water. Here, the vapour condenses into attar. The process demands twelve to sixteen hours of uninterrupted attention for a single harvest.
At Sugandh Ink, we source exclusively from these ateliers, refusing the shortcut of synthetic aroma chemicals. Each composition begins with this truth.

The Sandalwood
Foundation
All traditional attars are received into old sandalwood oil - a living base that absorbs and integrates the distilled essence over months. The sandalwood acts not merely as a carrier but as a collaborator, deepening and rounding the botanical character.
Our attars rest in Mysore sandalwood for months before being sealed. No synthetic fixatives, no alcohol. Only time and wood.

Sugandh Ink was established in 2025 in Malad East, Mumbai - a city of layered sensory experience. The maison bridges the ancient knowledge of Kannauj with a contemporary sensibility shaped by the diversity and energy of India's commercial capital.
Each fragrance in our library is a dialogue between heritage and modernity: the botanical truth of the attar tradition expressed through compositions designed for the contemporary Indian life - office mornings, monsoon evenings, and quiet midnight hours.

Integrity
We maintain direct relationships with growers across Rajasthan (rose and jasmine), Kerala (vetiver and pepper), Assam (agarwood), and the Nilgiris (cardamom and eucalyptus). Every harvest is traceable. Every relationship is long-term.
We categorically refuse the use of synthetic aroma chemicals in our core attar line. For our contemporary perfume compositions, we work only with IFRA-approved naturals and the minimum necessary of safe synthetic musks - disclosed fully on every product page.
A Chronology
The milestones that shaped the Maison.
The First Distillation
Ancient texts describe the preparation of Sura and Asava through distillation in Kannauj - the original perfume city of India, then known as Kanyakubja.
The Mughal Patronage
Empress Noor Jahan is credited with discovering the process of extracting Rose attar. The Mughal court elevated Kannauj perfumers to royal status, cementing the Deg-Bhapka tradition.
The First Composition
Sugandh Ink's founding nose travels to Kannauj for six months, studying under third-generation attar makers. The first original composition takes form.
The Maison Opens
Sugandh Ink launches in Mumbai with a library of twenty-nine compositions spanning attars, contemporary perfumes, and one-of-a-kind bespoke creations.
